How to clean a folding knife ?
Cleaning a folding knife requires a bit more attention than caring for a fixed-blade knife, mainly because of its mechanism and the often noble materials used to craft it. To preserve its function, appearance and longevity, a few simple yet precise habits are essential.
A folding knife: both a tool and a collector’s item
Whether used for hiking, at the table or as an everyday essential, a folding knife is as much a practical tool as it is a personal object that many enjoy keeping for years. At La Grande Coutellerie, Claudine Dozorme — Master Cutler — carefully selects folding knives from the finest workshops, including the renowned Claude Dozorme brand as well as other prestigious makers. These knives, often handmade using high-quality materials (precious woods, horn, carbon fibre, premium steel), deserve dedicated maintenance.
Why regular maintenance is essential ?
Over time, residues, dust or moisture can infiltrate the mechanism of a folding knife. Without proper cleaning, this can lead to:
- rust on the blade
- blockage or squeaking during opening/closing
- premature wear of the locking system
- deterioration of natural handle materials
Steps to properly clean your folding knife
1. Clean the blade
After each use, carefully wipe the blade with a soft cloth, lightly dampened if necessary. If you notice stains or grease, use a little soapy water and dry immediately.
Important: never soak a folding knife in water, and avoid the dishwasher entirely.
2. Clean the mechanism
If you notice buildup around the hinge or locking system, you can use:
- a cotton swab or small soft-bristle brush
- a toothpick or needle to reach tighter areas
- a little 70° alcohol to degrease without damaging the parts
Once or twice a year — or more depending on use — apply a tiny drop of fine oil (such as vaseline oil or firearm maintenance oil) to the pivot to ensure smooth, silent movement.
3. Care for the handle
If your knife has a wood or horn handle, occasionally apply a natural oil (linseed oil or beeswax) to nourish the material and prevent drying or cracking. Synthetic handles simply need a gentle wipe.
